Claudia Dennis

I was born in Kingston, Ont and became interested in painting when I was a teenager. In 1976 I went to study art at Concordia University in Montreal and one of my teachers was Yves Gauthier, a color field painter. In my second year there I changed my major from Graphic Design to Painting. I did my fourth year at U of T and moved to Edmonton Alberta in 1981. I worked for a while at the Citadel Theatre there, and got to see a lot of live theatre, then came to Ottawa where I obtained my B.F.A.by taking my last credit for my degree at Carleton University in 1990.

In the past my paintings had been big and abstract, minimalist or color field painting. When I started taking courses at OSA in 2008 my paintings were of fruits and they became very colorful. I took creative painting with Blair Sharpe as well as figure drawing with Blair Sharpe, Rehab Nazzal and others. I love to draw the figure and I feel that the drafted and painted figure as a subject in art is a bonafide and compelling art form in itself.Art for me has been a way to lose myself and express myself, kind of like art therapy. My favourite artist is Vincent Van Gogh.
