Dick Stanley has been trying to paint and draw all his life. The first showing of his art occurred when he was eight years old and surprised him more than anyone. He designed graphics for his high school newspaper. He was layout editor for his university yearbook for three years. As a graduate student in New York, he designed stage sets, built exhibition booths, and painted publicity posters to help pay his tuition. Unfortunately, life got in the way and he had to take a job unrelated to painting and drawing in order to earn a living and raise a family. His career, however, eventually led him to work in arts policy and research and so brought him back toward drawing and painting. Since his retirement in 2004, he has been able to devote himself more seriously to art and has studied at the Ottawa School of Art as well as at Algonquin. He has participated in several group shows and some of his paintings hang in private collections.
