Since the early 1970’s Doug developed a keen interest in the modeling side of life drawing while at university. In 2003 he refreshed his modeling skills at a model training session at the Ottawa School of Art and has been working for schools, life drawing groups and occasionally for individual artists ever since.
Being part of the creation of an artwork gives Doug a deep personal satisfaction. The modeling sessions give him energy and often provide a feeling of renewal afterwards. He feels very comfortable in his skin; nudity is a non-issue which has allowed him to accept the aging process as it comes. His poses radiate that easiness with himself and therefore they always look natural.
While Doug prefers the dynamic of the short poses over the comfort of the longer poses he is equally adept at either. The gestures give him an opportunity to perform; he often follows a storyline with a good variation of well grounded standing, bending and sitting poses. He is very still in his long poses, which are often sitting, and he hardly needs a break.
Doug enjoys portrait work, although he admits that maintaining the facial expression is one of the most difficult challenges: It is the emotional content that starts to drain after a while, even if the muscles do the proper job.
Doug’s inspiration comes from both within and from the artists he is interacting with, he is confident about himself and his work and it pleases him to be part of a finished art work. He is one of the most reliable art models in the Ottawa art scene.
