David Houlton

Following graduation from the Ottawa School of Art Diploma Program as a mature student, I have been the recipient of numerous prizes - a study grant from Bell Canada, Best in Show awards from Loomis & Toles, Wallack's and Artguise as well as awards from the Ottawa Art Association.

My work has been regularly shown at the Ottawa Art Festival and the Ottawa Tulip Festival with my first solo show in 2005 at the Rothwell Gallery in Ottawa.

My work can best be described as "romantic expressionism" in nature and colour. The objective is to create a still life of plants and flowers together with figure studies that are a presence, not a background. Inspiration is taken from Michelangelo's quote, "All good paintings start with the figure". These living things create a joy and excitement all their own. My work is the creative force of both drawing and painting; I cannot separate an image from a combination of both. You will see this in my work as I move from the drawing process to painting. This process is often repeated over and over in layers.
