Jennifer Kershaw

In 2004, I earned my B.A. Honours degree from the University of Guelph, majoring in Studio Art with a minor in Art History, graduating with distinction. Soon after, my husband and I loaded up our rheumatic, beloved car (Ethelred the Unready) and an equally decrepit U-Haul and headed off to Ottawa, Ontario to begin a new life.

Light, life, and identity are the three main themes I explore in my work. Whether on an individual or mass scale, my painting contemplates the transient nature and transformative power of light as a means of co-opting the traditional Christian morality of Memento Mori as well as questioning the symbols of Canadian identity and landscape. Light measures our days and lives and also elevates the ugly and mundane, like an urban industrial complex, into the realm of the sublime. I have chosen oil paint as my medium for its rich vitality and lush juiciness - properties that facilitate my discourse on these themes.
