Rosemarie Dalgliesh

I feel that shedding light on a particular aspect of a person, place, or time involves tuning in to the mystery that underlies the elements of art. Such fundamental considerations as line, light, colour, texture are intrinsically enigmatic because, like their correlatives in nature, they contain endless possibilities for change.

I paint not only to interact with a subject, an idea, a place, but also as a means of engagement with the painting materials themselves. I feel that a painting works when it seems to have its own momentum, in a form that contains unexpected suggestions. As a result, the true “aim” of the work is often revealed through the experience of painting itself. For instance, when working on a portrait, the gestures and colours that a particular expression inspires frequently lead to an unanticipated interpretation, but one that feels right when the subject seems to be present in the painting. It is during such moments that I feel the intensity of the subject’s unique, individual nature.

Rosemarie Dalgliesh was born in Ottawa. She paints mainly in oils and watercolour. Rosemarie studied art with Canadian painters Ken Finch, Pat Durr, and Susan Feindel, as well as at the University of Ottawa, and the Ottawa School of Art.
