Shirley Jean Lawrence

My husband and I arrived in Canada in 1962 having emigrated from London, England. Sometime after the birth of our fourth child, in the late 1960’s, a friend wanted to attend a wheel throwing class, so I happily became the chauffeur once per week. I became so enthralled with the clay that apart from “time out” for our family considerations I have been working with clay ever since. As an extension of my clay-work I have had some sculptures cast in bronze and have also carved figures in stone.

In order to develop my skills and my outlook I have attended many courses at various locations:

• The School of Fine Arts Ottawa

• The Halliburton School of Fine Arts, Sir Sandford Flemming College

• The School of Fine Arts at Actinolite with Mary and Roman Schneider

• The Nepean Visual Arts Centre

• Algonquin College

• As well as an extensive number of Workshops.

Many pleasurable years have been spent teaching and watching the progress of my students and proudly seeing their confidence grow as they improve and develop their own styles.Clay is such a pliable, versatile and fun medium to work with. Try for yourself and enjoy!
